Hurricane Sandy is currently threatening the Eastern Seaboard of the US, with meteorologists predicting little mercy from the Category One storm set to hit tonight.

But weather disasters like this tend to have a direct impact on the technology that keeps us going day to day. Hurricanes in particular, have a history of doing so.
There are currently a number of data center servers located largely in Virginia and other areas that are predicted to be in high intensity zones of the storm, which have a history of being taken down by weather disasters, but companies are working hard to fortify and protect these valuable assets.

Damage to or the loss of these data centers could negatively impact the servers of Apple, Google, Amazon, Dropbox and so on. All of these companies rely on these specific server farms, and a lot of consumers rely on the services they provide. At the current time, one percent of the internet is powered by Amazon’s cloud. Might not sound like much, but knock it out and you might notice.

If all goes well, the servers will not be affected and fortification efforts will be successful. However, if the storm causes extensive damage, who knows what damage could be done to the internet, and how these changes might affect big companies and consumers alike.

This begs us to ask the question, what would you do if the internet was shut down? Even if only temporarily, this would have some massive implications.
